M-4 Psychiatry Selectives
Overview and Contact Information
While going through the selective M-4 courses in psychiatric medicine, the students will master more detailed areas of study within the field of psychiatry. During these courses, they will gain a better understanding of the prevention, incidence, prevalence, manifestations, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of illness within the populations and settings in which they will work. While some of these courses are directed to those whom have an interest in psychiatry residency, many will offer an experience that will help the primary care physician and all physicians in their future medical practice.
M-4 Psychiatry Selectives
- PM 302 – Child and Adolescent Psychiatry – This course offers child and adolescent experience within the field of psychiatry. Students will work with attendings, fellows, and residents to provide psychiatric care to pediatric patients. This course aims to give students more exposure to and practice caring for youths with mental disorders.
- PM 308 – Outpatient Psychiatry – This course aims to offer a general outpatient psychiatry experience. Students will work within an outpatient clinic, seeing both new and established patients with mental health diagnoses. The population encountered consists of adults with moderate and severe mental illness. Students will get the opportunity to further interview, formulate, present, and document their encountered cases within the outpatient setting.
- PM 314 – Eclectic Psychiatry – This is a personalized course with the goal to fill in any experience or knowledge gaps of the student within of the field of psychiatry. As such, this class is typically for those that want a more personalized experience and intend to pursue a career within psychiatry. The student will meet with the director of this course 4 weeks before it begins or sooner to discuss and develop the details.
- PM 405 – Acting Internship in Inpatient Psychiatric Medicine – This is an intensive inpatient psychiatric experience that occurs on the Vidant Behavioral Health Science Unit. It is typically only taken by the student that has a strong interest in a career within the field of psychiatry. The student’s role will be similar to that of an intern in the inpatient setting and will consist of comparable duties but with a lower number of patients.
- PM 407 – Child and Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry – This is an intensive inpatient pediatric psychiatric experience that occurs at Cherry Hospital. It is typically only taken by the student that has a strong interest in a career within the field of child and adolescent psychiatry or developmental/behavioral subspecialties within pediatrics. The student’s role will be similar to that of an intern in the inpatient setting and will consist of comparable duties but will a lower number of patients.

PM 415 – Consultation and Liaison Services – This course offers experience with consultation and liaison psychiatry. Students will work with a team that includes attending psychiatrists, residents, and psychologist attendings and learners to provide consultation to services in the hospital regarding the mental health of patients. This course aims to give students more exposure to the role psychiatry can play in the hospital beyond the behavioral health unit and emergency department.
