M-3 Psychiatric Medicine Clerkship
Overview and Contact Information
This course will build on the Block 4 Basic Psychiatry course and aims to strengthen the student’s diagnostic skillset through direct use of the DSM-5 with patient care. During their time in the course, the M-3 student will begin to use their knowledge of development, psychiatric illness, and psychopharmacology to develop basic treatment plans around these DSM-5 disorders.
While going through the clerkship the student will also gain a better understanding of the dynamics of the physician and patient relationship. Students will begin to refine their interviewing and communication skillsets while on the clerkship and will understand how the intricacies of this affects treatment efficacy and compliance. Upon completion of this course, the student should be more knowledgeable of the social and psychological determinants of health. The successful student will begin to formulate ways to address psychosocial barriers to care.
