General Adult Psychiatry Residency Overview

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at the Brody School of Medicine/East Carolina University offers a 48 month psychiatry residency program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We currently matriculate eight residents for each of the four post-graduate years.

Requirements

Requirements for admission to the program include graduation from an accredited four year medical school, passing Step I and Step II of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and a J1 visa (when applicable). The applicant must qualify for a medical license with the North Carolina Board of Medicine. Successful completion of the program will help qualify the graduate for the certification examination by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). East Carolina University is an equal opportunity employer and we take pride in our ability to attract highly qualified minority applicants for residency training.

Faculty

Our diverse and talented faculty is enthusiastic about teaching the art and science of psychiatry and behavioral medicine. All faculty members are active clinicians, proficient in the rendering of modern, evidence-based treatments and all participate in the mission based functions of education, research and patient care. Residents receive intensive training in biological psychiatry along with the teaching of psychoanalytical theory and training in the major schools of psychotherapy. Research is encouraged and supported. With the rapidly expanding understanding of complex mental disease states our training equips graduates with the clinical tools and basic knowledge to become an effective clinician in the 21st Century.

Opportunities

Our residency program provides opportunities to train in a variety of training sites throughout eastern North Carolina. The patient population is socially, economically and racially diverse and is drawn from Pitt County and the surrounding 33 counties. Residents have opportunities to develop specialized skills for the practice of rural psychiatry and are exposed to telemedicine as one way of expanding a service delivery system. Those residents interested in a career in child psychiatry may complete a five year program (3 years in general psychiatry followed by 2 years in a child fellowship), qualifying the successful trainee for board eligibility in both general and child psychiatry. A combined Psychiatry/Internal Medicine program is available for physicians seeking such specialized training and dual board certification.
Competitive salary and benefits are provided for our residents. Because we are a small program, we know our residents as individuals with unique training needs and interests. We maintain flexibility to tailor the program to meet those needs while insuring that our graduates gain competence to begin their challenging and rewarding careers in psychiatry and behavioral medicine.
