Rotations

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry residents complete their Inpatient Rotation at Cherry Hospital, a 274- bed inpatient psychiatric hospital serving the citizens of 36 eastern North Carolina counties. It is operated by the Department of Health and Human Services of the state of North Carolina and is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

The Residential Rotation includes clinical experiences at several locations.
There are two North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention sites: Dobbs Youth Development Center and Lenoir Youth Development Center. These are state juvenile justice facilities provide custody, rehabilitation, and treatment to adjudicated males ranging in age from ten to eighteen. Pitt County PORT Human Services is an adolescent substance abuse residential treatment program. This program is largely based on a 12-step model ninety-day rehabilitation program with an integrated school on site. The Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf is one of two North Carolina public residential schools that serve children who are deaf or hard of hearing. A proportion of the children also have emotional and behavioral disorders.

Our residents are exposed to a broad array of pediatric patients at other sites including the ECU Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic, Pediatric Neurology Clinic, and the Pediatric Outpatient Consultation Clinic. The residents also rotate at the Summer Moore Children’s Center which serves children from infancy through kindergarten age with developmentally appropriate education programs encompassing childcare, early education, special instruction, specialized pediatric therapies, and family support.

The residents become familiar with different child serving systems such as the Pitt County Department of Social Services; the Greenville TEACCH Center (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication Handicapped Children program); and Tedi Bear Children’s Advocacy Center for child abuse victims and their families.
