Clinical Rotations & Where We Train

Residents in the ECU Psychiatry Residency Program train across a diverse network of academic, hospital, outpatient, community, veteran, and affiliated psychiatric settings throughout eastern North Carolina. Most clinical experiences are based in Greenville, with selected rotations in surrounding communities that broaden exposure to rural, community-based, veteran, and state psychiatric care.

Four Years of Clinical Training

ECU Health Behavioral Health Hospital – Greenville

2820 MacGregor Downs Road, Greenville, NC

ECU Health Behavioral Health Hospital is a freestanding behavioral health hospital and a major inpatient training site for the residency program.

PGY-1 residents complete a substantial portion of their adult inpatient psychiatry training at this site. Residents return to the hospital during later years for additional inpatient, night-float, and senior clinical experiences with progressively greater responsibility.

Training at the hospital emphasizes acute psychiatric assessment and treatment, multidisciplinary care, risk assessment, treatment planning, and safe transitions across levels of care.

ECU Health Medical Center – Greenville

2100 Stantonsburg Road, Greenville, NC

ECU Health Medical Center is the flagship teaching hospital of the Brody School of Medicine and a major tertiary-care referral center for eastern North Carolina.

Residents train at ECU Health Medical Center in emergency psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, interventional psychiatry and ECT, medicine, neurology, and other hospital-based experiences. The medical center’s broad regional referral population provides exposure to medically and psychiatrically complex patients and supports close collaboration across specialties.

ECU Health Behavioral Health Care – Outpatient Clinic – Greenville

905 Johns Hopkins Drive, Greenville, NC

The ECU Health Behavioral Health Care – Outpatient Clinic is the major longitudinal outpatient training setting for the residency program.

Residents develop skills in longitudinal medication management, psychotherapy, diagnostic assessment, treatment planning, and coordination of care while following patients over time. The outpatient setting also supports subspecialty, interdisciplinary, and elective experiences.

PGY-3 residents complete their longitudinal continuity-clinic year in this outpatient environment, and PGY-4 residents continue longitudinal outpatient work while preparing for independent practice.

Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University – Greenville

The Brody School of Medicine is the academic home of the residency program. Residents participate in didactics, conferences, scholarly work, teaching, mentorship, and other educational activities within the medical school and Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine.

ECU Health Behavioral Health – Washington

Community-based experiences in Washington, NC provide residents with exposure to psychiatric practice outside the primary academic medical center.

These experiences emphasize community psychiatry, access to mental health services in eastern North Carolina, interdisciplinary practice, and the challenges and opportunities involved in providing care in rural and underserved communities.

East Carolina University Student Health Clinic – Greenville

The ECU Student Health Clinic provides opportunities for sleeted residents to gain experience evaluating and treating the mental health challenges of the college student population in an outpatient setting.

Experiences may include longitudinal psychiatric care and exposure to conditions particularly relevant to student populations, including mood and anxiety disorders, attention deficit disorders, major life transitions, substance use disorders, and other behavioral health conditions.

Greenville VA Clinic – Greenville

The Greenville VA Clinic provides opportunities for selected residents to gain experience caring for Veterans in an outpatient setting.

Experiences may include longitudinal psychiatric care and exposure to conditions particularly relevant to Veteran populations, including mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorders, and other behavioral health conditions.

Cherry Hospital – Goldsboro

1401 West Ash Street, Goldsboro, NC

Cherry Hospital is one of North Carolina’s state-operated psychiatric hospitals and serves the eastern region of the state.

When incorporated into the educational schedule, experiences at Cherry Hospital provide exposure to state psychiatric systems and the care of patients with severe and persistent mental illness whose treatment needs may require a higher level or longer duration of inpatient psychiatric care.

Clinical sites and specific rotation assignments may evolve as services and educational opportunities develop. The program continuously reviews its clinical experiences to ensure that residents receive broad, high-quality training while progressing toward independent psychiatric practice.
