Residency PGY-4

Overview

PGY-4 offers opportunities for specialization within the field of psychiatry, consolidation and integration of knowledge bases, and more advanced psychotherapy training. PGY-4 residents spend one half day per week in the Outpatient Clinic seeing their continuity patients. They return to the inpatient unit and serve as a junior attending. While some of their inpatient time includes patient care responsibilities, they find that this experience is quite different from PGY-1 and PGY-2. Administrative psychiatry is taught and residents can observe and experience the dynamics of a large, tertiary care hospital. PGY-4 residents have opportunities to present original research and are encouraged and supported to attend a national meeting. Each resident chooses a faculty mentor and prepares a scholarly Grand Rounds. After remaining requirements are met, residents may develop elective experiences to broaden their knowledge base or assist them in subspecialty choice. PGY-4 residents serve as role models and mentors for more junior residents as well as 3rd and 4th year medical students.

The clinical rotations in PGY-4 are primarily based in Greenville at ECU Health Medical Center, in the Brody School of Medicine at ECU Clinics or at affiliated programs. Residents spend 2 months at our Washington, North Carolina clinic learning rural psychiatry. Electives sites can be local or residents may choose to complete electives in clinical sites which are outside of the BSOM catchment area.

  • 3 blocks Adult Inpatient Psychiatry (Senior Rotation)
  • 2 blocks Community Psychiatry (ECU Health Washington Clinic)
  • 1 blocks Consult and Liaison Psychiatry (Senior Rotation)
  • 1 block Substance Abuse (Senior Rotation)
  • 6 blocks of Electives
  • One continuity clinic half-day per week in the Outpatient Clinic
